This book is prepared to honor one of the most influential contributors to the discipline of development economics. Sanjaya Lall of Oxford University always sought to use evidence as the basis for framing theory as well as policy design, free from the constraints of ideology and conventional approaches. He was deeply concerned about the problems of underdevelopment and sought to understand its real causes through an inductive set of lenses. Like Sanjaya Lall, the contributors to this volume share his vision of attaching the details of development analysis and policy to empirical evidence, and hence, avoid imposing unrealistic assumptions to blur real analysis.
