I walked two-thousand one-hundred and forty miles on behalf of wounded service members and their families. In April of 2010, I began a cross country walk from Camp Pendleton in Oceanside, California to Fort Benning, Georgia. The journey took ninety-eight days and five pairs of shoes. What began as a walk to support The Fisher House Foundation evolved into a conversation with America, its people and the natural environment which was always at my feet. I wrote a daily blog which was my journal about who I met and what challenges I encountered every day as a fifty-seven year old man walking twenty-plus miles per day.
Chapter One describes my California experience fighting high winds and ironing out just how to cover twenty miles day on foot.
